Learn Here, Lead Anywhere: Nicaragua Consulting (Part 1)

Skills in understanding an international business market are becoming increasingly important for MBA graduates. That is why the Crosby MBA program is creating opportunities for students to get real-world experience outside the United States.

In January 2017, ten students, one faculty member, and one Mizzou alumna, traveled to Nicaragua to consult with a women’s coffee cooperative. They spent one week gathering information, strategizing and finally presenting to the leaders of the community. Their objective was to grow revenue for the coffee-growers while gaining international business experience.

This initial trip was designed to lay the groundwork for future expeditions. The following is a video based on a presentation given by the two project leaders.

Dispatches from Maastricht: No Matter the Country, Finals Week Is Finals Week

IMAG2235Olivia Harrison will graduate from the Crosby MBA program in May. During the last eight weeks of the fall semester, Harrison studied with her classmate, Kevin Nielson, at Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics in the Netherlands. She and Nielson maintained personal blogs of their experiences and have allowed us to repost some of their content.

Nothing screams the end of the semester is near more than an overload of projects, presentations, and exams. The past three weeks have been a race to the finish, with new projects to complete each week.

For the past couple of weeks, we’ve had a business case to analyze and write up, including one about approving future loan applicants for a bank, analyzing VISA customers, and looking at improving the efficiency of costs at a hospital. (more…)

Kevin Nielson will graduate from the Crosby MBA program in December. During his last eight weeks as an MBA candidate, Nielson is studying with his classmate, Olivia Harrison, at Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics in the Netherlands.  He and Harrison maintain personal blogs of their experiences and have allowed us to repost some of their content.

A large part of studying abroad is experiencing different cultures. While my classes require a significant amount of time, they meet Monday through Thursday, allowing for long weekends to travel and enjoy Europe. You have to be disciplined, but there is time to complete readings and reports and accomplish group work during those days. I have made it a priority to see a lot of new things during the two months I am here.

For this, Maastricht is well situated. There are connecting trains and rental cars for trips to nearby cities, which also allows you to see the countryside along the way. There also are many budget-friendly airlines for weekend getaways that are a bit farther away.​ (more…)

The learning experiences at Maastricht University are quite distinct from those at MU, and I want to share some of the differences.
