A group of five Crosby MBA students, Aola, Narisara Chayamitr, Estefania Guillen Pascacio, Thao Hoang and Hung Nguyen, along with Professor Andrew Kern from the Finance Department and instructor of the Crosby MBA class Investment Strategies of Warren Buffett, recently attended the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder’s meeting. This is one of the biggest events of Mr. Warren Buffett’s company, Berkshire Hathaway. The meeting provided all shareholders an opportunity to listen to Warren Buffett’s opinions about the performance of the company in the past year and the outlook for the coming fiscal year. Approximately 40,000 people attended this event and it was held in Omaha, Nebraska.
Not only did the students get to attend the meeting but they also got to participate in several other events over the weekend. They were interviewed by CNBC television business channel, which was interested in hearing the expectations about the event from business students who took the Investment Strategies of Warren Buffett course. They also attended the Berkshire Hathaway Cocktail party hosted in Borsheims Fine Jewelry Mall and visited the exposition of more than 20 booths of Berkshire Hathaway’s companies. Lastly, at the conclusion of the meeting, the students were able to attend the Berkshire Hathaway Picnic hosted in Nebraska Furniture Mart.
The MBA students felt that attending this event was a unique and relevant learning experience. They were able to learn Mr. Warren Buffet’s and Vice Chairman Mr. Charlie Munger’s reasoning and thought process behind the business decisions they have made during the past fiscal year. It also gave them the opportunity to learn what are the main concerns and expectations of the current shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway. The outlook for the company was given as Mr. Buffet and Mr. Munger start transitioning their positions to other managers. Finally, they learned about the importance Mr. Buffett plays in the success and continuous development of his company as well as the influence he has over the state of Nebraska.
The five Crosby MBA students in attendance were international students coming from different part of the world. They felt this event was an opportunity to be exposed to a shareholder meeting of one of the most successful US companies and to understand how Berkshire Hathaway performs on achieving its goals, as well as informing business decisions to its shareholders. The lecture allowed them to see in action the concepts they had learned in the MBA class, Investment Strategies of Warren Buffett. More importantly, they learned how Berkshire Hathaway capitalizes on these kind of events through continuously building Mr. Buffett personal brand as well as the exposure of the different products and services Berkshire Hathaway companies offer.
A special thanks for Crosby MBA student Estefania Guillen Pascacio for providing the content and pictures for this blog.
